Steps to take in an Emergency

  1. Your brain needs oxygen to function properly so you MUST take long, deep breaths, not short ones. Continue taking deep breaths until you are sure that can take care of the situation. If you don't think you can handle it get help. If you don't think you can handle the situation, don’t,CALL 911. Waiting too long could dramatically affect the situation.
  2. Decide what you need to do, and do it. Do it right while still being timely. Quickly think about each choice you make, and think about the affects of it. Be fast but don't rush things to the point you can't remain calm. Rushing can lead to pointless decisions that will only waste more time. Before going through with any choice, make sure it's worth the while. When you make a decision, go through with it.
  3. After you've gone through your choice, call 911 immediately. Your choice could help slow the situation, but no matter how good it was,CALL 911. If there are other people in the situation, while you're making your decision, have someoneCALL 911.
  4. Follow the instructions of the emergency dispatcher on the phone and don't hang up. Help any injured people and think about what you would need in their situation. If there is more then one injured person, help the most critically injured first. If you need a cloth or water have a bystander get it. Don't leave anyone unattended unless absolutely necessary.
  5. Try to relax. Wait for the emergency responders to come. There's basically nothing more for you to do after you've made your choice and have called 911. Don't go completely numb, but don't freak out either. Continue your deep breaths, and remind yourself over and over that you've done all you can. Don't feel you need to make another decision to make things right, because the specialists will know exactly what to do once they arrive.
